NEW INTERSTELLAR OBJECT-ATLAS/31

A new Comet known as 31/ATLAS ( Asteroid Terrestrial Impact Last Alert System) is approaching the solar system.....this was spotted by Astronomers on 1st of July.... 

So many comets appear and disappear but the thing that is special about this comet is that it does not belong to our solar system and is coming into it from interstellar space....which means it is from another star.....till now our telescopes had an opportunity to view only 2 such objects from close quarters and they are the Comet "Oumuamua" in the year 2017 and 21/Borisov discovered in the year 2019.....that makes it only the 3rd interstellar object entering our solar system...

This would give our Astronomers a good opportunity to study an object from another star and not the sun ....

The comet is travelling in a hyperbolic orbit which would carry it away from our solar system and it is therefore once in a lifetime event....it is travelling at a speed of 58 Km/Sec relative to the Sun...it only has a diameter of about 1Km...its closest approach to the Sun would be on 29th October at which time it would be at a distance of over 20 crore Km from the Sun...

We say relative to the Sun because the entire Universe is in motion and only the relative speeds of such an interstellar object can be measured.....

Our earth revolves around the Sun and so does the entire solar system.....in turn the Solar system revolves around the centre of our Galaxy the Milky Way at a speed of 230 Km/Sec....

The Milky Way Galaxy in turn is in turn moving at a speed of about 580 Km/Sec.....also it is continuously expanding....

So in the Universe everything is in relative motion and the speed of any object can be measured only by reference to a particular point....we take that relative point as the Sun because that is valid for us to perceive....

HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE- A WONDER!!!

 The Hubble Space Telescope is telescope in space. It was launched by NASA in the year 1990 to explore and take pictures of the stars and galaxies.  It is named after the American Astronomer Edwin Hubble and has a 94 inch diameter lens. It cost about USD 5 billion at the time of its launch. It has already completed 30 years of service and is likely to be operational till the year 2030-40. It cost NASA USD 5 billion in 1990 and if built today and deployed its cost would be about USD 20 billion. Subsequently further expensive instrumentation was added by the space missions later. It orbits the earth 547 Km away in space. It has so far made more than a million observations.

Now why does one require a Telescope in space?  It is stationed far above the clouds, beyond light pollution and atmospheric distortions. 5 space missions had reached the Hubble Telescope over the 30 years of its operation which maintained and upgraded its instruments. Hubble Telescopes range extends from Ultraviolet through the Visible and into the near Infrared. This has allowed the telescope to deliver stunning images of stars and galaxies that have inspired people all over the world and changed our understanding of the Universe. Over 18,000 peer reviewed scientific papers have been published on its discoveries.

The Hubble Telescope has changed our understanding of the Cosmos forever by its spectacular path breaking discoveries. It takes pictures of stars and galaxies at huge distances. Actually it takes monochromatic or black & white pics which are later colored as per the elements present and their luminosity by scientists after estimations.   

Following are a few illustrations of Hubble Telescope discoveries: As one sees them, one understands the insignificance of man all the more. One feels eerie to see the “Pillars of Creation” as it is called which is a cloud of dust and gas where innumerable new stars are forming and is 5 light years across. This is considered the most popular photograph taken by the Hubble Telescope. This was how our sun as one of the stars originally formed about 460 crore years ago.

HERBIG HARO 901 IS A MASSIVE PILLAR OF GAS AND DUST IN THE CARINA NEBULA, A HUGE STAR FORMATING REGION IN OUR GALAXY SEVERAL LIGHT YEARS ACROSS. 7500 LIGHT YEARS AWAY FROM US. IT CONTAINS AFEW MASSIVE YOUNG STARS. THIS PIC IS FAMOUSLY KNOWN AS “MYSTIC MOUNTAIN” . HERBIG HARO OBJECTS ARE BRIGHT PATCHES OF GAS AND MATTER ASSOCIATED WITH NEWBORN STARS.

SPIRAL GALAXY NGC 691-LOCATED 120 MILLION LIGHT YEARS FROM EARTH. IT IS BIGGER THAN OUR GALAXY AND IS 130,000 LIGHT YEARS ACROSS COMPARED TO 100,000 LIGHT YEARS FOR MILKY WAY.

LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE

 It is fanciful to think that many such life forms like those on Earth exist in the Universe and those have given rise to the myriads of stories about aliens to us.

Earth was once considered to be the centre of the Universe, with humans being the epitome of perfection, but are we really the perfect product of evolution?

When we do not know the facts, we tend to generalize things and try to bring them into our own thought to make things easy for us to understand. But those principles that we hold sacred may not hold for other forms of life. We tend to straight jacket life into a particular familiar pattern.

We initially assumed that earth was the centre of the Universe which is today exploded to bits by newer findings over the millennia. Today we know that earth is but a tiny speck of dust moving in space, utterly insignificant in the Universes’ scheme of things.

That is why in our way of thinking and definitions we search for life, and thus far our search has not yielded anything that can be remotely considered as life as we define it on the earth.

Earth teems with life whether it is in the steaming pools coming in from the earth by way of sulphur springs or even in the frozen wastes of Antarctica. Life started fairly recently as per Geological time scale, yet it abounds everywhere on earth.

But the in the past, earth has been radically different from the climate and atmosphere on the earth we have today. Initially it had been lava covered rock with a poisonous atmosphere, a world of oceans with bare microbial life, later a steaming tropical planet with huge dinosaurs and finally came the cave dwelling humans. It passed through many stages and life as we know slowly evolved.

Now, technically life cannot be an accident that occurred only on earth. It should have also occurred elsewhere, but mankind searches for life that is akin to it as per its definition on earth. Movies portray aliens like lizards with horrendous looking features looking exactly akin to our physical structure with a head, a torso, hands and feet.

Is it necessary for life to resemble the way we look? It may look like a sphere, or a cylinder or a block which uses other ways to move than hands and legs. Its physiology may be utterly different from us and its internal organs need not resemble ours in any way.

When we search for life, we essentially search for life as we know on earth in an anthropomorphic way. Perhaps that is why we are failing to spot life elsewhere. The way other forms of life perceive and communicate may be totally different from ours.

We use radio waves for communication, so we send out radio waves into the Galaxy hoping that if there is life elsewhere they would be spotted by them.

What if they do not use radio waves for communication and use some other principles that is unknown to us (say Z waves)? What if they find the principle being used by them is the most appropriate for long distance communication and radio waves are not perceived by them at all.

Hence, just like us, they would be looking only in the Z waves for interstellar transmission and not through Radio waves.  Similarly another civilization on another planet may be using a third principle which is unknown to both us as well as the 2nd civilization mentioned above.

Organisms in different planets because of their evolution may perceive things differently from us and their organs register something else which we cannot. They in turn may not be able to perceive what we do.  

This may well be the reason we are not finding another civilization. We look for life forms and perception resembling our own, with also the same mistake being committed by them. That is why we cannot find each other.

It is both improbable and impossible to assume that we are alone in this Universe. Therefore the only logical explanation is the difference of methods and perception that is foxing us all. Now is this barrier of perception insurmountable?

As of today that appears to be so. Our planet is only about 450 crore years old and there would be planets as old as 1000 crore years (The Big Bang occured about 1380 crore years ago). In the evolutionary ladder, civilization on such planets should be crores of years ahead of us, yet no contact yet, so is it that the communication barrier is insurmountable because of differences in perception?  

 

COMETS

 Since time immemorial Comets have played on the feelings of humans. They were considered to be an ill omen to oncoming disastrous events. The oldest mention of a Comet was made in the Epic of Gilgamesh which is the oldest written epic in the world. This was written down on tablets way back in 1600 BC in the Akkadian language.

It is better to look at Comets scientifically as astronomical bodies ignoring those myths.

However, before knowing about Comets we also have to know what are Kuiper Belt & Oort Cloud. 

KUIPER BELT: An imaginary disc in the outer solar system originating from the orbit of Neptune from 20 AU (AU-Astronomical Unit-Distance from Earth to Sun 147 million KM) away and stretches up to 50 AU in space.

Like the Asteroid belt it contains remnants from the formation of the solar system 4.6 billion years ago and is composed of frozen methane, ammonia and water. This is also home to the dwarf planets: Orcus, Pluto (now classified as a dwarf planet), Haumea, Quaoar and Makemake.

More than 100,000 Kuiper belt objects with over 100 Km diameter are supposed to exist. 

OORT CLOUD: This is different from the Kuiper belt and it stretches from 2000 AU from the earth to 200,000 AU.

The collective objects from the Kuiper belt and the Oort Cloud are known as Trans Neptunian Objects or TNO’s.

Comets are bodies of icy frozen gases, rocks and dust left over from the formation of the Solar System 4.6 billion years ago. They orbit the Sun in highly elliptical orbits that in some cases take hundreds of thousands of years to complete.   

As a comet approaches the Sun it heats up to turn the ice into water vapor, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and other trace substances which become visible to us as the Comets tail. While some comets contain more ice, others contain more dust.

As of now the number of known comets is 3743 although billions of them may be orbiting the Sun beyond Neptune in the Kuiper Belt & the Oort Cloud.

A comet consists of a Nucleus, coma, hydrogen envelope, dust and plasma tails. As the Comet approaches the Sun it gets heated up by the solar winds and a part of the frozen gases melt and form its tail. In some Comets the tails only consist of dust. The tail always points away from the sun due to the Solar winds.

We can see a number of comets with the naked eye but most of them are small and have to be viewed through telescopes. Comets leave a trail of debris along their paths and may lead to meteor showers on Earth.

Comets are classified according to the duration of their orbits around the Sun.

Short period comets complete one orbit in 200 years or less.  Long period comets take more than 200 years.

There are some comets that are not bound to the sun and their orbits take them out of the solar system. They are called single apparition comets.

Scientists believe that short period comets originate from the Kuiper belt and the long period comets come in from the Oort cloud.

Some Comets known as sun grazers smash right into the sun or get so close that they breakup and evaporate. Some researchers believe such comets may pose a threat to the earth as well.

Comets are generally named after their discoverers.

The Halleys comet is the most famous in the world. It becomes visible to the naked eye every 75 years. It last flew near the earth in 1986. The Halleys comet is only 15 Km long.

In 1994, the comet Shoemaker Levy collided with Jupiter with Jupiter's pull ripping it apart resulting in 21 visible impacts.

The largest collision among them created a fireball that rose 3000 Km above Jupiter's cloud tops. It exploded with a force of 6000 giga tons of TNT.

In 1997, the comet Hale-Bop came to 197 million Km from the earth and was about 30-40 Km across.

In 2021 scientists have discovered the largest comet ever seen known as Bernadinelli-Bernstein. The comet is about 100 to 200 Km across. This would make its closest approach to the earth in 2031 but would still pass at a great distance.

EARENDEL-FARTHEST KNOWN STAR TO THE EARTH.

 The star EARENDEL was discovered in March 2022 by the Hubble Space Telescope. But the properties of the star and its brightness are now better revealed by the James Webb Space Telescope. The star lies in the Sunrise Arc Galaxy.

The star is found to be twice as hot as the Sun and about a million times brighter than it. It is located 12.9 billion light years away from us and is the farthest star known to us. The Big Bang with which our Universe originated occurred 13.9 billion years ago, so the star got formed just 1 billion years after the Big Bang. A Light Year is equal to about 9.46 lac crore Km.

Actually when we see stars, we see through time. We are now seeing EARENDEL as it was 12.9 billion years ago. However, as the Universe is expanding the star would now be 28 billion light years away from us.

Actually at such enormous distances like 12.9 billion light years, a single star, however bright it may be, would not be visible to our telescopes. However, Gravitational lensing and magnification by a massive Galaxy cluster known as WHL0137-08 which has thousands of Galaxies in it has made EARENDEL visible to us through both the Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescopes. 

To put it in perspective our Galaxy the Milky Way is an average Galaxy and has 100,000 crore stars in it. Hundreds or thousands of such Galaxies form a Galactic cluster. 

GRAVITATIONAL LENSING:  Extremely massive bodies bend the light from the objects behind them. When light passes through such a body, it behaves as though it is passing through the lenses of a telescope highly magnifying its  brightness.

GHOST PARTICLES

 What are the Ghost particles and why are they so named?

We know the electron which is negatively charged and has a minute mass. 9.11* 10-31  Kg. While the Neutrinos are electrically neutral, they have a mass of only 1.25*10-35 Kg.

That means the weight of a Neutrino is about 73000 times less than that of the Electron when the Electron itself has a minute mass. They are produced in the process of decay of the heavier particles.

Since these particles are electrically neutral, they do not interact with anything. They are the most common particles in the Universe.  

They are tough to detect because they rarely collide with atoms.

Because of their lack of electric charge and their minute mass, about 100 trillion, neutrinos pass completely harmlessly through our body every second. In our numerals, this figure would be 1 crore crores. And that many neutrinos pass through our body each second without us even noticing it.  

Sometimes Neutrinos interact with water molecules. That is why China is building an underwater ghost molecule telescope in the South China Sea.

Currently, the largest Neutrino detecting telescope is developed by the University of Madison and is located in the Antarctic. Its sensors span around 1 cubic Km, and China claims its telescope will span 75 cubic Km when completed in this decade.

Scientists do not know why the massively abundant Neutrinos act the way they do. They defy the established rules of Physics.

 There was a time when people thought they knew everything about fundamental particles when they came to know about the Electron, Proton and the Neutron.

But as science and research progressed the number of fundamental particles expanded. With what is known as of today, there are 31 particles of which 25 are fundamental in the Universe.

Let us see what they are.

Scientists have classified two fundamental types of particles; 

1. Matter Particles 

2. Force Particles.

Some of the Matter particles combine to produce the world around us.

In the force particles one, the Photon is responsible for electromagnetic radiation.

Matter particles are known as Fermions, and the Force particles are known as Bosons.

The LEPTONS  are divided into

1. Electrons,

2. Muons,

3. Tau,

4. Electron Neutrino,

5. Muon Neutrino

          The Baryons in turn are divided into

           1. Proton

           2. Neutron

           3.  Lamda

           4. Omega

           5. Up Quark

           6. Down Quark

          The Mesons are divided into

         1. Pion

So there are currently 25 fundamental particles in the Universe governing Matter & Force. Of them, 20 are Fermions & 5 are Bosons. 

HUMAN EVOLUTION IN BRIEF.

 Life appeared on the Earth about 350 crore years ago in the most rudimentary form, as a cell and the first organisms were Bacteria.

In 1936 the Russian Biochemist A.I.Oparin has propounded the theory that life originated by Chemical evolution. This theory stood with time and later could be proved in the laboratory 1953 when the 4 amino acids, Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine and Thymine, the basic strands of DNA could be synthesized. It is today accepted by a large majority of scientists.

Then, Earth was not what it was today. It was much hotter and filled with Methane, Ammonia and Water vapour. Our Sun continuously emits Ultraviolet rays which would completely destroy all life on earth if they reach the Earth. Today we are protected from this deadly radiation by the Ozone layer in the atmosphere, but there was no Oxygen on the earth then and therefore no Ozone. So it would have been impossible for any form of life to exist on the primordial earth then. Then after sometime, due to the ultraviolet radiation and the numerous lightning blasts occurring on account of the heavy cloud cover of water vapour; Methane, Ammonia and water vapour reacted with each other and combined to form the Amino acids which are the building blocks of the DNA and therefore life. This theory was proved by the Stanley Miller experiment.

All animals have been named under the binomial nomenclature. The first word of the nomenclature denotes the “Genus” and the 2nd the “Species”. All of you know this.

This is our species that evolved about 300,000 years ago. This started evolving from Homo erectus about 500,000 years ago and crystallized 300,000 years ago. All other species in the Genus Homo except us have died out.

 

Between the ORDER of PRIMATES, and the FAMILY of HOMINIDAE is the INFRAORDER SIMIFORMES. This infra Order contains both Monkeys and Apes. The ancestors of humans at that time were similar to apes only and are combined in this infra order.

Our Genus Homo started with Australopithecus about 2.5-3.0 million years ago in East Africa. It then separated from its Tribe named Hominini which includes Chimpanzees.

Next to come in after Australopithecus was Homo Erectus, which was a species of the Genus Homo. This came into being about 2 million years ago. It had a human like gait and body proportions. It is also the first human species to have exhibited a flat face and a prominent nose. It is the first animal to walk erect.

This evolved into various species of man. Firstly, African population of Homo Erectus has given rise to many species. Homo Heidlebergensis (ancestor of Neanderthal man), Homo Antecessor, Homo Denisova, Homo Neanderthal and finally the modern humans. The Asian Homo Erectus evolved into Homo Floresiensis and Homo Luzonensis. The time of disappearance of Homo Erectus (last identified was Solo man from Java) was about 110,000 years ago. Thus the species of Homo Erectus existed for almost 2 million years which is a very long time for us. 

Our species the Homo sapiens is the only species currently living in the Genus Homo. It evolved at about 300,000 years ago. Since Homo Erectus was alive till 110,000 years ago that means our ancestors and the Homo Erectus (including Neanderthal man) lived on the earth at the same time. Yet all other species of Homo Erectus became extinct leaving us all alone in our Genus. Why so we do not know?

Thus the evolution of man which started with Chordata 540 million years ago took so much time to evolve into our species 300,000 years ago. 300,000 years is like just yesterday in Earths chronology.

Our species is so young, yet in such a short span it has managed to dominate the planet like no other species had done. What is the reason for this phenomena we do not know? Yes it is intelligence that made us supreme, but why did some other species too not develop intelligence and why our species alone?

The first city humans ever built was Jericho which dates back to 9000 BC. So for almost 290,000 years of the existence of our species, we did not develop any higher civilizations, but it took us just 10,000 years to dominate all other species and virtually rule the earth.

Now going ahead would humans destroy themselves? To me it appears very much probable. We already have Nuclear weapons and we cannot even imagine what weapons humans would further develop in the future. The rapid development of our race had undergone seems to be pushing it to the edge. In the process we not only endanger ourselves, but also endanger all other species on the earth. Would the human race survive? We can only speculate on that and hope that wiser counsel would prevail on our race in the future.

Forget about Monkeys and Apes, it is unbelievable to think that further back, we had a common ancestor with Tree Shrews, Tarsiers and Squirrels.  They also belonged to the ORDER PRIMATES and our ancestor separated from them only between 55 million and 14 million years ago.

Of course if we extend our ancestry back further, we would land at the first single cell that had evolved on the earth. That is an unbelievable fact which actually shocks us. That way, each species of animals and even plants that have evolved on the earth is related to us.

QUANTUM ENTANGLEMENT & QUANTUM COMPUTING.

 Formulated by Werner Heisenberg in 1927, the UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE states that we cannot know both the position and speed of a particle, such as a photon or electron, with perfect accuracy; the more we nail down the particle's position, the less we know about its speed and vice versa.

A similar uncertainty principle also applies to problems in pure math and classical physics—basically, any object with wave-like properties will be affected by this principle. Quantum objects are special because they all exhibit wave-like properties by the very nature of quantum theory.

Quantum law comes into play in the quantum world because subatomic particles can behave like waves. A common misconception about the uncertainty principle in quantum physics is that it implies our measurements are uncertain or inaccurate. But that is not so at the macroscopic level. In fact, uncertainty is an inherent aspect of anything with wave-like behaviour which the sub atomic particles have.

Now firstly Quantum theory is applicable for microscopic particles. There is a phenomenon known as QUANTUM ENTANGLEMENT.

Quantum Entanglement is an amazing phenomenon by which two microscopic particles at a massive distance which may even be billions of light years apart are linked in such a way that a change in one particle reflects in the other instantaneously. Now this does not get affected by the distance involved. This actually defies the theory of Einstein that nothing can travel faster than light because the change is instantaneous irrespective of the distance involved.  Einstein called this phenomenon spooky.

QUANTUM COMPUTING: This branch of computer science is based on the principles of the superposition of matter and quantum entanglement and uses a different computation method from the traditional one. In theory, it would be able to store many more states per unit of information and operate with much more efficient algorithms at the numerical level.

In a binary world consisting of ones and zeros, quantum computers would be like the Albert Einstein of computing, with extraordinary electronic brains capable of completing tasks that would be almost impossible for ordinary computers to handle. 

The multinational IBM will be the first to market this wondrous technology with the Q System One, a 3x3-metre glass cube with 20 cubits presented in 2019. IBM revealed a bigger quantum computer consisting of 53 cubits in 2019 itself.

ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE

 Our Sun is an average star in the Universe. 100,000 crore such stars make the Milky Way Galaxy which is just an average galaxy. There are again 10,000 crore such galaxies in the known Universe. The known Universe has a diameter of about 1380 crore light years. We are prefixing it with known because we do not know what lies beyond this. Perhaps a vast empty area with properties unknown to us, and then maybe another Universe, and so on. Even if our science develops for another million years (looks unlikely with Nuclear Weapons around) still we would not be able to fathom the secrets of this cosmic whole.

 What is the origin of the known Universe? Most of the Cosmologists have accepted the Big Bang theory as the most plausible explanation for the formation of the Universe. This was propounded by the Belgian Physicist and a Roman Catholic Priest Abbe Georges Lemaitre in 1927. As per this theory the entire matter in the Universe is concentrated as one single mass a long time ago. At that point of time there was neither space nor time and we cannot even imagine what is outside this mass. Space and time are relative concepts and when the entire Universe is in a single mass, then they cannot be measured at all and cease to have any meaning.

 As such large amount of matter together gives rise to high gravitational attraction; all the matter got attracted towards its center. As the mass shrunk on account of the huge gravitational forces an enormous amount of heat was generated. The statistics of this Primeval atom are mind boggling. A cubic centimetre of matter from it would have weighed some 100 million tons.

 Matter becomes hotter as it constricts and colder when it expands and in this concentrated primeval atom the temperatures would have been so enormous that even atoms did not exist and neither did protons and electrons. The temperature would have been 100 billion degrees Kelvin one hundredth of a second after the Big Bang.

 Only the neutrons remained in this primeval state and scientists have named this primeval matter as Neutronium. It would not have been possible for the matter to be in this intensely hot state for long and it would have exploded only in a fraction of time. The massive explosion threw matter in all directions and with the expansion they have cooled slowly to form atoms and later coalesce into stars and solar systems and planets.

 Atoms started forming only about 377,000 years after the Big Bang which is estimated to have occurred some 14 billion years ago. Scientists have estimated the time when that single mass exploded by simply projecting back the possibility of an explosion and counting back from now.

 There is an indirect proof for the explosion of the primeval atom (what else can we call it?) and it is known as Microwave Background Radiation. American radio astronomers Penzias and Wilson found in 1964 that in whichever direction they turned their radio antenna, a radiation (later named as Microwave background variation) not corresponding to any star or a galaxy or an object is found in all directions of the Universe with the same wavelength and frequency. This relates to a certain homogenous temperature throughout the Universe and this can be extrapolated to the Big Bang.


STARS MORE OF THEM

 How did Astronomers initially calculate the distance of stars from the earth? One method is to use the parallax. If a person keeps a finger in front of eyes and closes one eye the object viewed looks at one place. If we close that eye and open another then the object looks to be at a different place. Based on the deviation of the object on account of parallax, the distance can be calculated.

However, the stars are so far away that our parallax method would not work even if we take opposite points on the earth to measure the parallax from stars. The Astronomers therefore measure the parallax of a star today and after 6 months so they can take benefit of the distance of the earth’s orbit around the sun to get sufficient parallax. This is about 30 crore Kilometres and therefore provides sufficient parallax to measure the distance of the nearby stars.

In 1837 as astronomer called Struve measured the distance of 61 Cygni which is about 11.4 light years away from us using this method. In 1838 Bessel measured the distance to Alpha Centauri by this method to be 4.3 light years. However, measuring the distance of far-off stars is not possible with this method because the parallax tends to be negligible for stars at greater distances even with Earth’s orbit as a base. With the Parallax method scientists cannot measure the distances of the stars over 400 light years. Therefore astronomers use other methods for measuring them.   

Another method for measuring the distance of stars employs stars known as variable stars. These are stars whose light varies with time. These stars actually constrict suddenly because of their instability, and because of that their temperature increases while the light emission decreases. Then again they expand and come back to their original size and luminescence. There are many types of variable stars but the important among them are the “Cepheid Variables”, Long Period Variables, and the “ R R Lyrie stars”.

The first variable star discovered by the Astronomers was Delta Cephei and on its name other similar stars are named Cepheid variables. There are 2 types of Cepheid variables 1. Classical Cepheids and 2. Type II Cepheids.

Classical Cepheids are Yellow Super Giant stars. There are about 500 such stars in our galaxy. They suddenly increase their luminosity by about 1 magnitude or to 2.5 times its actual brightness. Then, they gradually come back to their original luminosity in 1 to 5 days. Even without a telescope we can see about a dozen of such Classical Cepheids. The pole star or Polaris is a Classical Cepheid.  

Type II Cepheids take about 12 to 20 days to get back to their original luminosity.

The Long Period Variables take up to 1 year to come back to their original luminosity.

The RR Lyrie variables take only half a day to come back to their original brightness and some of them do so in only 1.5 hours. These stars are Blue Giants.

How are distances measured by using these variable stars?

Just outside our Galaxy is a small nebula called Smaller Magellanic Cloud. There are many variable stars in that nebula. Now all the stars of that nebula can be treated at the same distance from us despite them being light years apart from one another. In that nebula, some variable stars are less bright and some are brighter. That means as they are equidistant from us their comparative brightness is true and is not just apparent.

An American astronomer named Henrietta Leavitt by observation discovered that variable stars with higher brightness are returning back to normal slowly while stars of lower brightness are doing so rapidly. Thus she deduced that wherever such stars may be in the Universe they obey the same principle. This makes it possible for Astronomers to measure the distances of variable stars.

Supposing 2 different Cepheids are located in different directions in the sky. If they light up and come back to normal in the same duration, we can understand that both are of the same absolute luminosity. Now, if these stars appear to us with different luminosity on observation, then their relative distances to us can be estimated. Thereafter if we can measure the distance of one such variable star which is nearby through parallax, based on that the distances of the other Cepheids can be calculated.

While the parallax method enables us to estimate the distances of only thousands of stars, the variables method enables us to measure the distances of millions of stars.

However, a Spectrometer using the light from the star can reveal many properties of the star like its chemical composition, temperature, density, mass, distance, luminosity, and relative motion. Fraunhoper initiated optical spectroscopy in the early 1800’s when he passed light from Venus, Moon, Mars & some stars through a Prism and observed the lines.

 

HERTZSPRUNG RUSSEL DIAGRAM -EVOLUTION OF STARS

Now higher brightness of a star means it is using up more of its matter and is rapidly converting it into energy. Now why do stars shine with different brightness? That depends on the amount of matter they possess.

For knowing the way the stars evolve an American called Russel and a Russian called Hertzsprung made a diagram known as the “Hertzsprung Russel Diagram”. or HR diagram.  In this diagram the X axis denotes the absolute magnitude of the stars and the Y axis denotes the temperature of the stars.

On the HR diagram, a star follows a specific pattern meaning the higher the temperature the higher the mass then those stars are known as main sequence stars. On the HR diagram, they follow a slope from the top left corner of the diagram to the bottom right corner. If we take a main sequence star its central part can be considered as a large nuclear factory. On top of that is the convective zone. The temperature at which the fission reaction takes place is from about 1 crore 40 lakh degrees centigrade onwards.

Initially, all the Hydrogen at the central part gets used up and all of it is converted into Helium and no further Hydrogen is available there to continue the fusion reaction. The fusion in the convective zone then stops. The core of the star starts condensing and becomes more and more denser. By that time the temperature over the convective zone increases to about 2 crore degrees Celsius and the fusion reaction is initiated there. After the Hydrogen reserves there are exhausted the fusion reaction moves to the higher layers. As this happens the temperature of the star increases and the volume of the star also expands. Due to this expansion, the temperature of the star decreases but as the star expands there is more surface area for radiation of light. At this stage, the star is known as a Red Giant. The surface temperature of the star cools down from about 6000 degrees to around 3000 degrees and it looks red.  

As the outer layer of the star starts expanding the central core full of Helium starts condensing more and more till such time it reaches a temperature of 10 crore degrees Celsius. At this point, the Helium nuclear reactions take over. Because of this, the fusion reaction comes back to the center but with a difference. Now instead of Hydrogen Helium uses up and starts getting into higher elements on account of the fusion reaction. These reactions produce Neon, then Magnesium, and gradually higher elements up to nickel. After that, the fusion reaction stops. The scientists assume that red giants are in this condition. Our sun still has 81.6% Hydrogen in it and for it to turn into a Red Giant it would take another 500 crore years.   

Finally, in the red giant stage does the star die because the thermonuclear reaction stops?

 మనిషి తాను ఎదో చాల కనిపెట్టేసాను, మనకు మించిన వాడు లేదు అనుకుంటాడు. అలాంటివాడి  చేత ఖగోళశాస్త్రం చదివిస్తే అతనికి మనిషి విశ్వంలో ఎంత హీనుడో, ఎంత అర్ధంలేనివాడో తెలుస్తుంది. 

మనిషి దేముడిని తన ప్రతిరూపంలో నిర్వచిస్తాడు. తనకు ప్రేమ ఉంది కాబట్టి, దేముడికి ప్రేమ ఉండాలి, తనకు ద్వేషం వుంది కాబట్టి దేముడికి ద్వేషం ఉండాలి. తనకు కోపం వుంది కాబట్టి దేముడికి కూడా కోపం ఉండాలి. అలాగే మనిషి తనకు ఉన్న సర్వ లక్షణాలను  దేముడికి ఆపాదించేస్తాడు. చివరికి దేముడిని తనలాగే ఆలోంచించేలా కూడా చేసేస్తాడు. 

మనలో చాల మందికి ఖగోళశాస్త్రం గురించి ఏమి తెలియదు. ఎందుకంటే మనం చదివినపుడు చిన్న గా ఆస్ట్రోనమి చెప్పినా  కూడా కాస్మొలజి (విశ్వ శాస్త్రం) గురించి టచ్ చేయలేదు ఎప్పుడూ. ఈ కింద ఇచ్చిన రైట్ అప్ మీకు ఖగోళశాస్త్రం మీద ఆసక్తి కలిగిస్తుంది అని తలుస్తాను. 

మహాభారతంలో కృష్ణుడు తన విశ్వరూపాన్ని అర్జునుడికి చూపించాడు. 

భగవద్గీత విశ్వరూపం గురించి అద్భుతమైన వర్ణనను ఇస్తుంది. ఇది 1000 సూర్యుల కంటే ఎక్కువ ప్రకాశవంతంగా ఉంటుందని చెప్తుంది. ఆ విశ్వరూపంలో దేవతలు, రాక్షసులు, మానవజాతి మరియు సమస్త విశ్వం కనిపిస్తుంది. దీనికి ప్రారంభం, మధ్య లేదా ముగింపు ఉండదని మరియు మనకు తెలిసిన లేదా తెలియని ప్రతిదాన్ని ఇది కలిగి ఉంటుందని చెబుతారు. ఇది తెలుసుకోలేనిది, సాటిలేనిది మరియు అర్థం చేసుకోలేనిది అని అంటారు. 

భగవద్ గీత   కూర్చబడిన సమయాన్ని ఊహించడం కష్టం. బహుశా క్రిస్తు పూర్వం 3  వ శతాబ్దంలో జరిగి ఉండవచ్చు.  ఆ సమయంలో విశ్వం ఇంత పెద్ద పరిమాణంలో ఉన్నట్లు చూపించిన సాహిత్యం ప్రపంచంలో మరొకటి లేదు. 

నక్షత్రాల మధ్య అపారమైన దూరాన్ని కొలవడానికి, శాస్త్రవేత్తలు కాంతి సంవత్సరం అనే యూనిట్‌ను ప్రవేశపెట్టారు. కాంతి సెకనులో 300,000 KM వేగంతో ప్రయాణిస్తుంది. ఈ వేగంతో ఒక సంవత్సరంలో కాంతి ప్రయాణించే దూరాన్ని కాంతి సంవత్సరం అంటారు. ఇది దాదాపు 9.4 లక్షల కోట్ల కి.మీ.కి సమానం. 

కానీ ప్రస్తుతం మనకు తెలిసిన విశ్వాన్ని వర్ణించడానికి భగవద్గిత లో వర్ణన ఏ మూలకు  సరిపోదు. భగవద్గీత యొక్క వర్ణన కూడా అసమర్థంగా మారుతుంది. చీకటి రాత్రి ఆకాశం వైపు చూస్తే, ఎన్ని నక్షత్రాలు కనిపిస్తాయి? చాలా మంది లెక్కలేనన్ని అంటున్నారు. కానీ అది అలా కాదు. మనంకంటితో చూసేది దాదాపు 3000 నక్షత్రాలు మాత్రమే. 

కానీ టెలిస్కోప్‌లను వీక్షించడానికి ఉపయోగించినప్పుడు కనిపించే నక్షత్రాలు అతి ఎక్కువగా పెరుగుతాయి. ఒక సాధారణ బైనాక్యులర్‌తో 50,000 నక్షత్రాలను మరియు 2 అంగుళాల టెలిస్కోప్‌తో దాదాపు 3,00,000 నక్షత్రాలను చూడవచ్చు. 330 అంగుళాల టెలిస్కోప్ మనకు 1200 కోట్ల కాంతి సంవత్సరాల దూరంలో ఉన్న నక్షత్రాలను చూడగలుగుతుంది. ఈ టెలిస్కోప్ ఎంత  శక్తివంతమైనది అంటే, చంద్రునిపై కొవ్వొత్తి వెలిగిస్తే దాని కాంతిని గుర్తించే సామర్థ్యం దానికి ఉంది. 

ప్రస్తుతం ప్రపంచంలోనే అతిపెద్ద టెలిస్కోప్ స్పెయిన్‌లోని “గ్రాన్ టెలిస్కోపియో కానరియాస్”. దీని వ్యాసం 409 అంగుళాలు. టెలీస్కోప్ ల పరిధి చాల ఎక్కువగా ఉండవచ్చు కానీ , కానీ ఈ టెలిస్కోప్‌లు మనకు తెలిసిన విశ్వంలో 5% మాత్రమే వీక్షించగలవు. మిగిలిన విశ్వాన్ని రేడియో టెలిస్కోపుల ద్వారా మాత్రమే తెలుసుకోవచ్చు. 

నక్షత్రాలు వివిధ తరంగదైర్ఘ్యాలతో కాంతి విద్యుదయస్కాంత కిరణాలను విడుదల చేస్తాయి. కొన్ని చాలా తక్కువ తరంగదైర్ఘ్యాలతో రేడియేషన్‌ను విడుదల చేస్తే, కొన్ని చాలా పొడవైన తరంగదైర్ఘ్యాలతో రేడియేషన్‌ను విడుదల చేస్తాయి. చాలా తక్కువ తరంగదైర్ఘ్యాలతో కూడిన రేడియేషన్ మన వాతావరణంలోని అణువుల ద్వారా గ్రహించబడుతుంది. చాలా పొడవైన తరంగదైర్ఘ్యాలతో కూడిన రేడియేషన్ అయానోస్పియర్ ద్వారా తిరిగి ప్రతిబింబిస్తుంది. 

మనకు చేరే రేడియేషన్ 0.0004 మిమీ (వైలెట్ రేడియేషన్) నుండి 0.0008 మిమీ (రెడ్ రేడియేషన్) వరకు తరంగదైర్ఘ్యం కలిగి ఉంటుంది. ఇవి మాత్రమే మన కళ్ళకు కనిపిస్తాయి. నక్షత్రాల నుండి మనకు చేరే మరొక రకమైన రేడియేషన్ రేడియో తరంగాలు. ఈ రేడియేషన్ VIBGYOR స్పెక్ట్రమ్ కంటే ఎక్కువ తరంగదైర్ఘ్యాలను కలిగి ఉంటుంది, అయితే ఇది భూమి యొక్క అయానోస్పియర్ ద్వారా ప్రతిబింబించేంత పొడవుగా లేదు. ఈ తరంగాలు ప్రతిబింబించే టెలిస్కోప్‌ల కంటే విశ్వాన్ని చాలా ఎక్కువ చూపుతాయి. ఈ కిరణాలు రేడియో ఖగోళ శాస్త్ర రంగాన్ని సృష్టించాయి. ప్రపంచంలోనే అతిపెద్ద రేడియో టెలిస్కోప్ ప్యూర్టో రికోలోని అరేసిబోలో ఉంది. దీని వ్యాసం సుమారు 1000 అడుగులు. 

మన సూర్యుడు మనకు అతి దగ్గరగా ఉన్న నక్షత్రం. మీకు తెలిసినట్టుగా గ్రహాలు అన్ని ఆయన చుట్టూ  తిరుగుతున్నాయి. ఆయన మనకు 14  కోట్లా 80  లక్షల కిలోమీటర్ల దూరంలో ఉన్నాడు. కానీ అంతరిక్షంలో  ఇది ఒక చిన్న దూరం మాత్రమే. 

సూర్యుని తర్వాత అనంత  విశ్వం. ఆయన నుండి దగ్గరగా ఉన్న నక్షత్రం దూరం మనకు 4 .2  కాంతి సంవత్సరాలు అంటే దాదాపు 40  లక్షల కోట్ల కిలోమీటర్లు. మన సూర్యుడు పాలపుంత (మిల్కీ వే) అనే గాలక్సీ లో ఉన్నాడు (గాలక్సీ అంటే ఒక పెద్ద నక్షత్ర సమూహం). మన గాలక్సీ ఐన పాలపుంతలో ఒక లక్ష కోట్ల నక్షత్రాలు ఉన్నాయి. దాని వ్యాసం ఒక లక్ష కాంతి సంవత్సరాలు. 

మన గాలక్సీ దాటి బయటకి వెళ్తే మనకు అతి దగ్గర్లో ఉన్న Andromeda  గాలక్సీ. మన నుండి దాని దూరం 29  లక్షల కాంతి సంవత్సరాలు. అసలు ఒక కాంతి సంవత్సరం   అంటేనే  9 .4  లక్షల కోట్ల కిలోమీటర్లు. అలాంటి గాలక్సీ లు దాదాపు 10 ,000  కోట్లు విశ్వం అంతా విస్తరించి ఉన్నాయి. 

మనకు తెలిసిన విశ్వ వయసు 1370  కోట్ల సంవత్సరాలు. దాని వ్యాసం 9400  కోట్ల కాంతి సంవత్సరాలు. కానీ విశ్వం పుట్టింది బిగ్ బాంగ్ ద్వారా. మరి ఆలా అయితే బిగ్ బాంగ్ 1370  సంవత్సరాల క్రిందట అయితే విశ్వ వ్యాసం అంత ఎక్కువగా ఎలా ఉంది? దానికి కారణం విశ్వ వ్యాకోచం. విశ్వం అనంతంగా విస్తరిస్తూ పోతుంది. అది ఇప్పటివరకు 9400  కోట్ల సంవత్సరాలు వ్యాసానికి విస్తరించింది. అది వర్తమానంలో విస్తరిస్తూ ఉంది, అలాగే భవిష్యత్తు లో కూడా అది విసరిస్తూ పోతుంది.


 

విశ్వం యొక్క ఆవిర్భావం.

మన సూర్యుడు విశ్వంలో సగటు నక్షత్రం. మన పాల పుంత (మిల్కీ వే) గాలక్సీ లో సూర్యుని లాంటి ఒక లక్ష కోట్ల నక్షత్రాలు ఉన్నాయి. ఇది కేవలం సగటు గెలాక్సీ. తెలిసిన విశ్వంలో మళ్లీ 10,000 కోట్ల గెలాక్సీలు ఉన్నాయి.

మనకు తెలిసిన విశ్వం దాదాపు 1380 కోట్ల కాంతి సంవత్సరాల వ్యాసం కలిగి ఉంది. ఇంతకు మించి ఏమి ఉందో మనకు తెలియదు కాబట్టి మనము దానిని తెలిసిన అని ప్రిఫిక్స్ చేస్తున్నాము.

దాని తరువాత బహుశా మనకు తెలియని లక్షణాలతో విస్తారమైన ఖాళీ ప్రాంతం, ఆపై మరొక విశ్వం ఉండి ఉండవచ్చు. కానీ అది ఊహ మాత్రమే. నిజమో కాదో చెప్పటానికి మన దగ్గర ఉన్న జ్ఞానం కానీ పనిముట్లు కానీ చాలవు.

మన సైన్స్ మరో పది లక్షల సంవత్సరాలు అభివృద్ధి చెందినప్పటికీ (చుట్టూ అణు ఆయుధాలతో ఇది ప్రస్తుతం అసంభవంగా కనిపిస్తోంది) ఈ విశ్వవ్యాప్త రహస్యాలను మనం గ్రహించలేము.

తెలిసిన విశ్వం యొక్క మూలం ఏమిటి? విశ్వం ఏర్పడటానికి అత్యంత ఆమోదయోగ్యమైన వివరణగా చాలా మంది కాస్మోలజిస్టులు బిగ్ బ్యాంగ్ సిద్ధాంతాన్ని అంగీకరించారు. ఇది 1927లో బెల్జియన్ భౌతిక శాస్త్రవేత్త మరియు రోమన్ క్యాథలిక్ పూజారి Abbe Georges Lemaitre చే ప్రతిపాదించబడింది.

ఈ సిద్ధాంతం ప్రకారం విశ్వంలోని మొత్తం పదార్థం చాలా కాలం క్రితం ఒకే ద్రవ్యరాశిగా కేంద్రీకృతమై ఉంది. ఆ సమయంలో స్థలం లేదా సమయం లేదు మరియు ఈ ద్రవ్యరాశి వెలుపల ఏమి ఉందో మనం ఊహించలేము.

స్థలం మరియు సమయం సాపేక్ష భావనలు, విశ్వం మొత్తం ఒకే ద్రవ్యరాశిలో ఉన్నప్పుడు, వాటిని అస్సలు కొలవలేము. అప్పుడు స్థలం మరియు సమయం అనే మాటలకూ అర్ధం పోతుంది.

అటువంటి పెద్ద మొత్తంలో పదార్థం కలిసినపుడు అధిక గురుత్వాకర్షణ ఆకర్షణకు దారితీస్తుంది; అంత పదార్థం దాని కేంద్రం వైపు ఆకర్షించబడింది. ఈ భారీ గురుత్వాకర్షణ శక్తుల కారణంగా పదార్థ విస్తీర్ణం తగ్గిపోవడంతో అపారమైన వేడి ఉత్పన్నమైంది.

ఈ Primeval అణువు యొక్క గణాంకాలు మన మనస్సును కదిలించేవి. దాని నుండి ఒక ఘన సెంటీమీటర్ పదార్థం దాదాపు 100 మిలియన్ టన్నుల బరువు ఉంటుంది. పదార్థం  ఎప్పుడూ కుంచించుకుపోవడంతో వేడిగా, మరియు విస్తరిస్తున్నప్పుడు చల్లగా మారుతుంది.  

ఈ సాంద్రీకృత ఆదిమ పరమాణువులో పరమాణువులు కూడా ఉండవు, చివరకు  ప్రోటాన్లు మరియు ఎలక్ట్రాన్లు కూడా ఉండకుండా పదార్థం అంతా కుదించుపోయి ఉంటుంది. అందుచేత  ఉష్ణోగ్రతలు చాలా అపారంగా ఉండేవి. గురుత్వాకర్షణ వలన వచ్చే పదార్థ సంకోచమువలన దాని ఉష్ణోగ్రత అపారంగా పెరిగిపోయి చివరకు దాదాపు 100  బిలియన్ (అంటే 10 ,000  కోట్లు) డిగ్రీ ల వేడిని చేరుకుంటుంది. అంత వేడిలో ఏ పదార్థం కూడా స్థిరంగా ఉండలేక పేలిపోతుంది. దాన్నే ఖగోళ శాస్త్రజ్ఞులు "బిగ్ బాంగ్" అని పిలుస్తారు.

బిగ్ బ్యాంగ్ తర్వాత ఉష్ణోగ్రత 100 బిలియన్ డిగ్రీల కెల్విన్ సెకనులో వంద వంతు మాత్రం  ఉంటుంది. ఈ ఆదిమ స్థితిలో న్యూట్రాన్‌లు మాత్రమే మిగిలి ఉంటాయి. శాస్త్రవేత్తలు ఈ ప్రాథమిక పదార్థానికి న్యూట్రానియం అని పేరు పెట్టారు.

WHAT IS LIFE-PART-1.

 DEFINITION OF LIFE: All groups of living organisms share several key characteristics or functions: order, sensitivity or response to stimuli, reproduction, adaptation, growth and development, regulation, homeostasis, and energy processing. When viewed together, these characteristics serve to define life.

Life abounds on earth in many forms. But what is life? Firstly, the origin of life on earth is one of the greatest mysteries of science. Are we alone in the universe? May or may not be, but we cannot give a definitive answer to that question.

Logically, we presume that since life evolved on Earth due to certain conditions, it should also evolve on other planets orbiting other stars in the Universe where similar conditions are present. But to date, we do not even know how life came about on Earth.

The Stanley Miller experiment proves that amino acids evolved on the primordial earth, but it does not say how those amino acids combined to form the varieties of life around us. A lot has to be understood yet about life and we need to solve that mystery to say something with certainty.  

The earth is about 4.5 billion years old. Scientists estimate that 200 million years after, that is about 4.3 billion years ago life evolved on earth. The oldest known fossils on the earth are however only 3.7 billion years old. That leaves a 600 million-year window for which we do not have any information.

During this time it is possible that life may have evolved but has been repeatedly extinguished by catastrophic collisions with asteroids and comets. However, we have not found any evidence for that so far.

Life is supposed to have first begun in volcanically active hydrothermal environments on land and at sea. Some microorganisms thrive in the scalding highly acidic hot springs environments like those found today in Norway and Yellowstone in the USA. Therefore such organism may have formed on planets with similar environments in other parts of the Universe.

However, this is merely a hypothesis without any supporting proof. This is the problem with life, as we do not know how inanimate became animate; it becomes very difficult to say if it exists on other planets.   

What are in the ingredients for life on Earth?

It requires a steady energy source like the Sun, organic compounds and water. There are some elements that are crucial for life. They are Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen and Phosphorous.

Now a planet so close to the Sun cannot actually have Carbon and Nitrogen. Both the elements become solid only under very cold temperatures that are not present on Earth. Carbon is rare at the earth’s surface and chemically bonds more with iron than rock. So how did the Carbon found on the earth’s surface get there?

Water now covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface but how much of it was there 4 billion years ago for life to evolve?

How did life emerge on Earth?

Scientists believe that life emerged from a Primordial soup. In 1952 as a University of Chicago graduate student Stanley Miller performed his famous experiment along with Harold Urey, a Nobel winner in Chemistry.

They injected Methane, Ammonia, and water vapor into an enclosed glass container to simulate lightning. Amino acids, the building blocks of Proteins soon formed in the container. They realized that this process would have created the way for the formation of life.

Scientists now believe that Earth's early conditions had a different chemical makeup from the one used by Miller in their experiment. The experiment gave rise to a new scientific field named prebiotic or abiotic Chemistry.

Some scientists think that molecules for life may have been produced outside the Earth and were brought to Earth by meteorites or comets. In 1969 the Murchison meteorite that fell in Australia contained dozens of different amino acids.

In 2019, a team of researchers in France and Italy reported finding extra-terrestrial organic material preserved in the 3.3 billion old sediments of Barberton, South Africa. They suggested micro meteorites as the likely source. Further evidence came in 2022 from the samples of the Asteroid Ryugu brought back by a Japanese mission. It had over 20 different amino acids.

Chirality means mirror image, non-superimposable molecules. An experiment in 1953 pointed out that without Chirality, large biological molecules like proteins would be unable to form structures that could be reproduced.    

But how can inanimate matter combine in a certain way to develop to be a composite organism in the first place, where each part becomes special for a particular job? It is very easy to say that some chemical reaction produced Amino acids as the Miller experiment has shown but, then how do those amino acids combine and formed the DNA, RNA and Proteins?

Is it not silly to say that they evolved? How did that happen? Again taking for granted that proteins and RNA and DNA have formed, how did they conveniently combine to make complex organisms?  

The problem here is that there are too many questions without any answers unless we exercise our sheer imagination which is not based on any proof.

The Soviet Biochemist A I Oparin has advanced his theory for evolution of life. In it he says

1.     There is no fundamental difference between a living organism and lifeless matter. The complex combination of manifestations and properties characteristic of life must have arisen as a part of the process of the evolution of matter.

2.     Taking into account the then-recent discovery of methane in the atmospheres of Jupiter and the other giant planets, Oparin suggested that the infant Earth had possessed a strongly reducing atmosphere, containing methane, ammonia, hydrogen , and water vapor. In his opinion, these were the raw materials for the evolution of life.

3.     In Oparin's formulation, there were first only simple solutions of organic matter, the behaviour of which was governed by the properties of their component atoms and the arrangement of these atoms into a molecular structure.

Gradually though, he said, the resulting growth and increased complexity of molecules brought new properties into being and a new colloidal-chemical order developed as a successor to more simple relationships between and among organic chemicals. These newer properties were determined by the interactions of these more complex molecules.

4.     Oparin posited that this process brought biological orderliness into prominence. According to Oparin, competition, speed of cell growth, survival of the fittest, struggle for existence, and, finally, natural selection determined the form of material organization characteristic of modern-day living things.

Even the simplest of unicellular organisms have a complexity of structure and function that staggers the mind and is removed from the beginnings of life by a genealogy extending for millions and millions of years.

Pasteur’s unequivocal experiments have given us irrefutable proof that living organisms, no matter how simple they might be, cannot be generated from organic matter. Yet this might have happened in the millions and millions of years of evolution. It is impossible by any experiments to prove Biogenesis but looking to the life around us it looks like a reasonably consistent logical necessity.

The conditions on the earth in the last 2 billion years have undergone radical alterations and perhaps Biogenesis may not be possible in the current conditions. Even if it does evolve, the innumerable predatory organisms that exist on the earth would quickly destroy any such new organism.    

So, is life a new property of Organic matter acquired in the course of evolution or is it something that resulted from the organization of organic matter?

There is every reason to believe that a certain period of Earth’s history must have been completely sterile. Proteins containing Nucleic acids are the only constituents of the organisms that grow and reproduce by self-duplication or by replication. Neither viruses nor genes can duplicate or replicate themselves unless implanted in a cell or nucleus. So are these Nucleo proteins living or non-living?   

Till Louis Pasteur conducted his brilliant experiments which were published in 1862, most scientists believed that microorganisms automatically got generated from matter. Pasteur conclusively proved that in every case the growth of the organism is due to contamination and there is no fresh generation of anything.

There are two fundamental theories based on the conception of continuity of life. 1. The theory of Cosmozoa along with the closely related theory of Panspermia and 2. Preyers theory of eternity of life.

Preyer starts from the empirical theory that all organisms are derived from similar other organisms, and questions “Is not the problem of the origin of life based on a wrong assumption that the living must have come sometime from the non-living?  “Why not consider the living to be in eternal existence like other inorganic matter?”

But if a living thing has only come from a living substance then that substance must have also existed at the time when earth was still a molten mass. Preyer insists that the living did exist in that molten mass. He says “If we rid ourselves of the idea wholly arbitrary and unsupported by facts that Protoplasm can exist only in its current composition, and of the old convenient prejudice that at first there was only inorganic substance, we can without fear take the next bold step, discard altogether all belief in a primary origin, and recognize the timelessness of the current of life. “
